Echesa to appear before court for bail
Former sports CS Rashid Echesa was captured assaulting an IEBC official during the Matungu by-elections. He has been in police custody and will remain until Tuesday when he will appear before court for ruling.
Echesa is said to have assaulted the official at Bulonga Primary school polling station on the event of the by-elections in Matungu constituency, Kakamega county.
Echesa was arrested the following day and appeared in court for the first time on Monday where the Kiambu magistrate said Echesa would continue being held at the Gigiri police station.
The prosecution had filed a miscellaneous application for the politician’s detention for seven days, for it to conclude its investigations into the matter.According to investigations officer Misheck Kagera, Echesa is a habitual offender who is likely to intimidate witnesses if released.
“The respondent is a habitual offender vide CR.121/54/2020, CF 271/2020 and many other cases that are under investigation.” said Mr. Kagera
His lawyer Cliff Ombeta has however said that the accusations have been trumped up with an intention of discrediting him. He also added that his client wasn’t arrested but presented himself to the police.
He also questioned why the case was being handled by the Kiambu court yet the offense happened in Kakamega.
The prosecution explained that Mr Echesa was moved to Nairobi and then to the Kiambu Law Courts because police had intelligence that showed his supporters were planning to cause chaos and storm a police where he was held briefly.
