It’s really sad that this epidemic that is eating away Kenyan youths had to be a trend on twitter for it to be taken seriously. Depression is an epidemic that is mercilessly taking the likes of people worldwide. Click here to learn about the causes, symptoms, and types of depression.

Taking it back a few months, we have heard more than a hundred cases of people killing each other or committing suicide in the name of depression. And those are only the cases that made it to the media. The hashtag DepressedYouthKE was made by the youths in a quest to try and air their stories and to try and finish this epidemic once and for all.

After analyzing what Kenyans were saying on Twitter, a conclusion was made that lack of employment and stable income is the leading cause of depression in Kenya. Which is understandable given that most of the youths are jobless and let’s not even talk about our economy.

20-year-olds in Kenya are often forced to hustle to sustain themselves in a country where securing employment is a struggle. Parents send their children to Universities where they acquire their degrees but a few years later they find themselves on the streets and unemployed.

This is the kinds of situation that is causing depression among youths. If only the government could do something about the unemployment situation in the country.

The youths on twitter were also sharing how they manage to cope with these feelings of stress and sadness. They were pleading with the depressed young people to seek help when it happens. It also helps if one beats the epidemic before it gets to him or her.
