Tesla electric car in Kenya
Kenyans online can’t keep calm after one of them went to the internet to flaunt their new Tesla electric car. This will be the very first vehicle of this kind in the country.
Owning a Tesla is no joke. One, the car is super expensive as it costs close to 10M kenyan shillings. 10M is shipping and taxation excluded.
According to a tweet by Alom Tha Great, taxation on EV’s is 10%. You can now do the maths.
Kenyans on twitter had a lot of questions about the car, from how it will be serviced. Do we have Tesla technicians in the country? How well will it operate on out Kenyan roads?
An electric car doesn’t have an internal combustion engine Therefore: – No Spark Plugs – No Engine oil – No Radiator Coolant – No Air Filter – No Oil Filter. You will have to replace consumables so things like – Tyres – Brake pads – Windshield wipers, which are available locally.
Another question Kenyans could not help but ask is how the car is charged. The Tesla model X can travel for long without running out of charge. The secret will be charging it from home. It will however take longer to charge . You can also charge it 3-4 times a month, depending on how far you drive.

When its fully charged, it can travel up to 600km.
However, the vehicle is not immune to failure. It can be very difficult to get parts for the electric motors or get assistance with software issues even in the countries that have official support. So you have to be very careful when handling your car.
Opening and handling the doors in a congested city like Nairobi can also be stressing.
It is a dream of many Kenyans to own a Tesla and now that its home, many are confident that their dream has gotten closer.
