40 families were left homeless in Nyeri after the county fire department failed to respond to their cry for help. According to a very angry woman expressing her frustration, she raced on foot to the fire brigade centre to ask for help after the houses caught fire but they told her that all the cars were in the garage being fixed.
“I called the fire brigade and even went there personally and they told me that all their vehicles were in the garage and will be fixed on Monday,” a distraught Ephantus Mwangi said.
She then went and confronted the governor who told her that they should look for their own ways to put out the fire since all the cars were being fixed.
Some boda-boda operators went to the garage in an attempt to jumpstart the fire engine to no avail. It was a chaotic scene as desperate victims used buckets and basins and to fetch tap water and try to put out the fire.
Nyeri County Police Commander Adiel Nyange said the cause of the fire is yet to be established but it has caused so many families their homes.
